WHAT GOOD BOOKS HAVE I READ LATELY? (This question appears frequently when a reporter is interviewing almost anybody. Perhaps it is just lack of imagination on their part. But just in case it has some merit and the reader is interested in learning which books are of interest, here is my answer.) I started reading books by Arthur W. Upfield years ago and was disappointed when I found there were no more available that I had not already read. A few months ago however, my wife found one I had missed. I enjoy books that provide information, in addition to a good story. Upfield's fictional detective is a half-cast aborigine who is called upon to solve mysteries in the different locals in rural Australia. Each book describes in detail the sites and ways of life of those living there -- and has made me want to travel there just to see it all for myself. In the same vane Tony Hillerman usually writes about the Four Corners Area and Indian customs, while Dick Francis' books have provided me with everything I might want to know about the business aspects of horse racing. I would be disappointed if either of these authors were not to write any additional books. I am in the middle of a Hillerman book now and have another book by Arthur Hailey next in line for when I am finished. I spend about an hour every morning reading the San Francisco Chronicle and an hour in the evening with the Sacramento Bee and one of my paperbacks. Good books might also include text books for three courses taken in the last six months. But I also find that learning from CD's is a great way to learn.
